Ever since I started taking pictures, my weapon of choice has always been a Nikon. I started with a d3000 in 2012 and reached a high point of owning a D4 in 2014. Wanting a smaller camera to take with me all the time, I picked up a Fujifilm X-E1 along with a 23mm f1.4 lens . I felt that this camera had the ability to complement my Nikon system .
While on a engagement shoot , I set the Nikon D800 down and attached my pocketwizard system to the X-E1. The camera worked flawlessly with my lighting setup. As I started to edit the files from the night, the Fuji files caught my eye . The colors were more natural and the skins tones were perfect. The files in general required less post production. Even though this camera is only an Aps-c sized sensor , the amount of detail it captures is the equivalent of a full frame sensor.
Shortly after the engagement shoot all my Nikon equipment was traded in for a full fujifilm lineup. The ability to have such a powerful system in such a lightweight and compact form, along with the beautiful color rendition makes the switch very worth it. I know my back will thank me in the future. Zack Arias and David Hobby were major contributors to my decision to switch. After seeing what they were able to capture with this fujifilm system, I felt confident enough to make the switch. I was able to pick up the X-T1 and 4 more lenses for what I got out of my Nikon setup.
The X-T1 is very capable in terms of performance, especially since the latest firmware update. Since the firmware update, the autofocus has continued to improve. The autofocus is just as fast if not faster than my previous nikon setup when using certain lenses. The low light performance of this camera is phenomenal. The lens lineup consists of very fast aperture lenses, and when you team that up with the ISO performance of the X-T1, the system performs very well.
The only thing that the fuji system is currently lacking is in the flash department. The current TTL system needs improvements, as well as the flash hardware. Fujifilm has listened to their customers since day one and are currently working on a solution. Until then I will continue to use my nikon speed lights and pocket wizard system.
